LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Bob Hankla May 2003

White's Woods Golf and Tennis Club is a fictional course located in the Pennsylvania hills near Indiana, Pennsylvania. I would come close to calling it imaginary due to the severe and sharp elevation changes. To set correct expectations, this is a 2001 course, so you will not see texture blending or high-resolution textures. Standing on the first tee gives you a pretty good idea of this course. You will see stock 2001 textures and extremely dense planting just off the fairway. You will also encounter a very sharp and deep drop-off on the right side of the fairway to a water hazard. I found the fairways to be a little on the narrow side considering all of the drop-offs and thick planting you'd encounter. You will also be firing into fairly small greens with very unpredictable undulations. The planting consists of a fairly small variety of trees, bushes, and multi colored flowers. The course layout has plenty of risk-reward holes to choose from, mostly created by the narrow fairways and steep drop-offs. It could be a very fun and challenging course to play. It can also get your heart pounding as you see some of your shots flying toward the fairway or green clearing the drop-off by a matter of feet, or falling what seems like a mile. As you may have guessed, there is a lot of OB in the layout. If this sounds like a blast to play, it will be if you can overlook the other dominant features of the course. The first of these would be the very repetitive nature of the planting on a lot of the holes. There needs to be a lot more variety of vegetation used, especially the trees. More than once the same tree will appear at the same height lined up in a row. The other unfortunate thing seen is a lot of shadows and sharp, irregular edges. These are manifested mostly around the greens, but can be seen elsewhere as well. In a few places they affected play, as shots could take some strange bounces and leave you in some strange lies. The bunker construction is also questionable in many places, due to the before mentioned edge and mesh problems. In summary, I would praise the designer for his imagination and creativity in the hole layouts. He has provided some very interesting and exciting challenges. I would also suggest that he spend some time mesh cleaning and smoothing edges and transitions. The mesh problems can distract the golfer, especially if he or she catches one of the bad bounces. Some variety and randomness in the planting would also be very beneficial.

Favorite Hole: My favorite hole would have to be #17, a 515-yard par 4 that doesn't play nearly that long. Off the tee you're faced with a 24-yard drop to a narrow fairway. You'll find the heavy planting on the right and another 46-yard drop-off on the left to a water hazard. Across that water hazard you'll find the green perched up on the side of a cliff some 210 yards away. Behind the green is overgrowth and trees, but in front of the green is nothing but air. It is a lot of fun to play this shot, as you don't know till the last minute if you have carried the chasm or not.

Recommendation: I you love exciting hole layouts and huge elevation changes and can overlook the mentioned shortcomings, give it a try. You have nothing to lose but a few cyber golf balls!
