LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner' April 2003
Dons resume includes, Foothills, Eagles Bluff, Cedar Springs and Elmer Creek made in the 2001 format with a score of 81%. I didn't play the earlier version but after reading the review I could see all of the changes made to the course for 2003, both positive and negative. I don't like the 'shell path' rims around the tee boxes but I certainly like the textures he used for them. He carried the same textures into the mowed fairways with a 'fringe2' (first cut), and into the greens also with a 'fringe2'. When you look at the top view it's difficult to tell where the fairway ends and the rough begins, there just wasn't enough of a color variation between the two. This could lead to a number of driving problems. An example would be when a 3w was called for because a number of the fairways were bisected by a patch of rough not made for a driver and you cant see the difference in color, bang your in the rough 'divider', a problem.yes, a disaster.hardly. He used an interesting and very attractive assortment of trees and as you can tell from the large shadow file I listed he made very good use of the 'top view' technique for a very natural quiet look to the course. He made good use of brush and bushes for an undergrowth and had plants growing up the sides of some trees to fill them in, a few that had nothing surrounding them had that 'stuck in' look, very few.
The varied elevations were slight but I found myself continually adjusting the trajectory of my clubs, by the way the caddie was excellent. The fairways were a shade under normal in size, not very well guarded but still not a walk in the park. The greens were medium to small, well sloped for those interesting breaks and I would say that they were closer to medium in difficulty, not easy. They were mostly well guarded by bunkers and occasionally water hazards, the varied shapes added to the pleasure of playing them. I found that the trees mostly on the front nine seemed to jump into my way both off the tee and in the fairway, interesting phenomenon and one that I had to allow for, you can see an example of this on hole # 3, par 5. He finished the course off with a rousing 569y par 5 hole. It had bunkers in the fairway and by the green all well placed plus a water hazard just before the green, an enjoyable way to end a nice round of golf at a beautiful course.
This not only was a very attractive course but because of the interesting shapes of the holes it was a challenging course. His hazards were well placed at the greens and although there weren't any crowds, objects, sounds etc. the course looked and played well. I don't know who tested it or if it was beta tested but the colors, the blending of the fairways and the rough made it a bit uncomfortable. This course is enjoyable and a small download as the new course size goes, download it and you won't be sorry.
