LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner'

March 2003

This is course # 3 for Kennet, the first two being Seven Oaks and Glenfiddich, neither of which was received very well, this is a welcome change. This course would have benefited immensely if it had the APCD 1.5 textures. The tee box and the unmowed fairway (without a first cut) were fairly flat looking. The semi rough that boarded the fairway led into a deep rough, which along with brush and bushes also seemed to serve as undergrowth. The greens were checkerboard with a fairly large fringe. The bunkers had brown sand and the trees which boarded the fairways looked full and nicely placed, a few times he repeated them but it wasn't that noticeable. I'd say the course along with the occasional rock formation and the pathways with nicely made small bridges was very 'nature-natural' looking and pleasantly quiet, if colors can be quiet. The fairways sometimes very wide sometimes very narrow gave you a chance to stop and think about the best way to play each hole, it wasn't an automatic choice, he varied them nicely. The landing area on hole # 16 a par 5 hole was incredible narrow and if you didn't hit the snap, you're in tree land. As for bunkers and water hazards at both the greens and the fairways they seemed to be harmless if your shots were normal. The greens were an interesting lot, they were small and had unusual shapes, fortunately he had the large fringe that I mentioned before and chipping made the course a little more fun. The greens changed from easy, to sloped to minor breaks, along with the sloped fairways whose size constantly changed made this an interesting course, far from the mundane courses we see so often.

Being a mountainous course the elevations were constantly changing both on the tees and the fairways and the caddie kept up with it quite well, but watch it especially if you land in the rough. On a few holes, # 10 for instance I used the bank behind the green as a backboard and bounceback put me in nice shape for a short putt. The fairways and the greens had a good amount of bunkers but again they seemed to be 'out of the way', play under harsher conditions and they will definitely come into play. The holes showed more imagination than he used on both of his previous courses combined and were interesting and at times very challenging.

The APCD work left something to be desired a few times and some of the Items that we are used to seeing now such as custom flags, cameos, even a read-me were missing. These are all Items that should be in a course and all he has to do is to use the tutorials freely available to him or just ask or search the design corner for information. He kept the course size down by not using sounds or hole previews but that does take away from the experience. It is an enjoyable little course to play, it could have been improved by beta testing but I would say that it is a fun course and very worthy as a download.
