LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Simon Kent

March 2003
When I originally was given this course to a review, I honestly felt like 'What, have I done something wrong', and this was basically due to the small size of the course and the fact that it was an unknown designer, which gave me the feeling that there was 'hell' to come.

History: Hell (Ocean Course) is an Imaginary Ocean, Par 3 Course (Par 56), set out in the middle of the ocean, with just yourself and a bunch of chickens to look at. From what I know of, it instantly set records for the smallest course and shadow file size ever (statistics in right hand column) and right away I thought hopefully it won't be the lowest ever review score as well.

Playability: I made sure to turn the wind off when I played this course, and that's why I actually did shoot a -12 (44). Because I think to actually have a chance of shooting any respectable score on this course, you need to 'not' play in Windy Conditions. A drastic change in the flat putt feel of this course occurred when I came across Hole 14 (Screenshot 1); it's the steepest elevation I have ever seen in a green, but yet somehow I still managed to get a birdie. If you really do want to play this course, I suggest turning the wind off, or if you are playing with friends, for fun, turn the wind on and see who lands in the water the most.

The Course: The course is basically a whole bunch of water, with chickens walking on it everywhere, completely defying gravity, and to me I would only use it as a course to practice your swing on in Windy Conditions or to laugh at your friends when they keep on plonking their ball in the water.

Technically: The greens and tees could have been made into islands, because out in the middle of the ocean it would be impossible for water to meet land like that without lapping over, and this made the course feel and look very un-realistic. The greens and tees should have had sometime of seaming from the ocean, at least in the form of elevation. I think if the designer wanted to technically create a course like this, they should have firstly looked at another ocean course, like The Crusoe Course and see what type of tee-off areas and greens they had. Things didn't need to be copied, but other courses like that could have been used a basic reference.

Areas To Improve: There was 5 Tees, but they were all right next to each other, and so if the designer wanted to include all 5 Tees, they could have maybe been on separate islands, because there is no advantage in this course from going off the front tees in anyway. Also due to this being a Par 3 Course, I saw no reason at all for including a Par 5 on the 18th, except to ruin people's scores.

Feedback: The enjoyment level of this course could have easily been better if the greens had slopes and curves; realistic things were added like edges, and big greens with bunkers or rough around them to help you in case you make a mistake. There could have also been some extras like Palm Trees, Boats and Dolphins (instead of Chickens). Basically first time designers should take their time when making a course, because surely 170kb doesn't show much time was spent making this course, considering it takes other designers months to create their courses.

Other: A quote from somebody on the Links Corner Forums,

'I was cruising along at -14, until the final hole, the Par 5 18th, when literally all "hell" broke loose; totally unplayable hole.' (Screenshot 3)

Recommendations: Adding things like a Splash Screen, Hole Previews, Handicaps and converting the tee-off areas and greens into islands would have helped improve this course.
