LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner'

February 2003

As it said in the rather sketchy read-me this is his first course and it took 95 days and 540 hours to build it. The indication on the splash screen is that this was built as a tour course but is much better than most of the ones that I've seen. They usually fall into our 20% class, plain, straight, 3 bunkers per green and a few trees just to let you know that life exists beyond our planet. This is definitely a downloadable course.

First I have to stop banging my head against the monitor, Whistlers Mountain returns.enough said! It has nicely textured tee boxes but the tee markers are in a perfect line, 5 sets, it looks like a bowling alley. Nicely textured and mowed fairways without a first cut followed the rough and then deep grass, it looks very nice but the first cut would have helped. The greens are checkerboard with a fringe. The planting is very deep and extremely well done. He has bushes and rock scattered around to give you the forest feeling that you would expect on this type of course. The bunkers have brown sand, again very fitting and they look quite well made. The water hazards are well decorated with tall grass and rock but at times when they cut into the fairway, they are plain and sharp, the rough stops and the water begins, there isn't a 'break' of any kind. I was going to mention that early on his colors were nicely muted and fit well into the course until I came up to the tee box on hole # 4. Now I was just hoping that I would have to mention just this one but as the course continued the flower, brick, and stone decorations became quite garish and I don't consider this a 'fantasy' course. On hole # 9 he switched, thankfully only once, to mulch lining both sides of the tee box and when I say that it was red, it was red. Fortunately this didn't seem to get any further into the course than the tee areas, wait until you see the giant benches on a few holes, the first I believe was on hole # 11. Hole # 16 had an island green with floating plants but the rim of the water hazard, not the green was lined with tanned brick. It looked like a 'bad' swimming pool.

The elevation changes were fascinating and fun, the caddie.perfect. The biggest problem is the course is mainly target golf, not the usual kind where you have to change clubs off the tee or even in the fairway. It plays long because of the elevations and the normal clubs can be used, if you don't use them you will be penalizing yourself by being short, but watch what you use when the wind is at your back, the ball will sail into the patches of rough bisecting the holes. My other complaint about the course is that most of the holes are not only blind off the tee but also even on the second shot. Without the top view the course would be useless. This is fun a few times but shouldn't be carried over from hole to hole. The fairways aren't too well guarded by bunkers but the water is ever present either as a 'body' or as a creek. At times he uses narrow fairways as the hazard, hole # 11 a 5 par 661y hole was winding, narrow and had the entire left side as a water hazard, interesting. The greens lean to the small side, some are tiered but when you come down to it they are fairly easy for putting.

I realize that all of my previous remarks make the course sound very unappealing; it isn't by a long shot. It's an enjoyable, often challenging course. It nice a nice driving course with all the elevation changes, it's a good scoring course with the flat greens with just minor breaks but it will be a course that will challenge you and bite you if played under any other conditions than the easy ones that I test under. Could it be better playing and better looking, definitely, all he needed to do would have had it beta tested. I realize that it would have added many more days and hours of work for him but it would have been well worth it. Download it, enjoy it and try it under varying conditions.

Reviewer Note

I am a player not a designer and therefore rate a course as a player for other players.
