LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Robert Rundel
February 2003
El Escorpion was originally released by Mike Jones in June of 2001. It was reviewed at that time by Mick Lenton (with additional thoughts by Dave Campbell and Chris Gormley), who rated the course at 92; the user rating was 5 stars. Now Mr. Jones has released version 2 of this course. I will review only the changes since version 1.
The best feature of this new version is the hole previews (screenshot 1). They include a good hole map with driving distances, and also some interesting advice on strategy. They should make it quite feasible to play this course without the overhead view.
Another change from the original version is that the grass textures have been changed. The new textures are a deeper green, and show more clearly the distinction between fairway, light rough, and thick rough. Screenshot 2 shows the view from the first tee in version 1, and screenshot 3 shows the same view in version 2. Note also that the steps beside the tee box has wooden sides added in the version 2 shot. Otherwise, I believe this hole is identical with that of version 1.
Screenshots 4 and 5 show another comparison, this time from the tee of the 3rd hole, a lovely par 3 over a lake. Again, screenshot 4 is from version 1, and screenshot 5 from version 2. The deeper green textures look very nice. Note also that the stonework around the teebox has changed.
These two comparisons are typical of the entire course. There are few changes aside from the addition of hole previews. The grass textures are better in version 2, in my opinion. There are just a few other changes, mostly minor and cosmetic.
I believe the changes make it worthwhile downloading the new version, especially if you already enjoy this course. If you haven't tried it, you are definitely in for a treat. This is an outstanding course in Links 2k1, and even better in 2k3 with shadows.
To quote the original review, 'This is a Mike 'Trent' Jones course. 'Nuff said!'
