LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Rand Herron

January 2003

I must apologize to the designer in advance because I have nothing flattering to say about this course. Sloppy is the key word here, and nothing about this course makes you feel that the designer really cares. It was thrown together and despite the small file size, in my opinion - not worth the download.

Overview:

Since there is no Readme file I had to look on the download site to get the designer's name. And so, I can only assume certain facts because nothing is being told with just a course file alone. The course appears to be a Fictional Island design, although you may be hard-pressed to find an ocean. Medium-toned standard textures are employed and in most areas of the course, creases and folds can be seen as well as missing textures. There are overlaps all over, unreasonable elevation changes and all the bunkers are undone with sharp edges everywhere. The plantings are everything but artistic. There are rocks and plants dropped in fairways, floating trees and bushes as well as flowers and rocks over 6 feet tall. Where there are rocks, the same rocks are used over and over with differing sizes. The same with grass weeds, and trees are repeated ad-nausea. Many trees are out of character for an island design. Cart paths are not connected zig-zagging around the course and even in the fairways. The water areas are not all flat. 2D and 3D objects are overly large. (See screen shot 1)

Playability:

The course is a Par 72 and plays 7360 long yards. The front is 3700 yards and the back is 3660 - from the rear tees. (The tee marker colors change from hole to hole) The most challenging part of the design is not getting caught in a fold or 15 foot high sand wall. (See screen shot 2) There are wide undulating fairways and water around the course. Greens are slanted and elevated with reckless abandon. I'm not really sure what the designer was trying to accomplish with such an incomplete design. There's not much more worth talking about strategically.

Sounds: None!

Extras: Splash Screen, Cameo, 3D Objects, Ball washers, Pathways.

Lacking: Hole Previews, Hole Handicaps, Buildings, Tourney objects, Spectators.

APCD Comments:

The lack of a theme and a Readme file is the first mistake. It is always best to give as much information as you can, and at the very least, your name. It is also never a good idea to release an untested course. The designer provides no motivation to play the course since he has not paid attention to detail at all. (See screen shot 3) The only thing I can assume is the course appears to be abandoned with frustration. Not going back and correcting vast errors is just sloppy and provides a dull and unadventurous outcome.

Overall, my best advice to the designer is that he read the online tutorials which are wonderfully informative. Use the bulletin boards to ask questions and work out problems you have. Be Patient! There are great designers willing to assist. And most of all, finish what you started before you release the effort. I apologize for the blunt comments, but I think honesty is the best policy. Good luck in any future designs!
