LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Randy McMinn

February 2003

Taken from Designer Read Me

Gut Kaden is a Frank Penninck design from the early 80ties, which was reconstructed and brought up-to-date for European Tour tourney-play by Karl F. Grohs in 1991. An 18 hole round of golf can be combined out of 3 separate 9 hole courses. The combination C + B is the home of the Deutsche Bank / SAP Open.

Appearance

The appearance of Gut Kaden CB is very , very nice!! The 2k3 textures does more the Gut Kaden designs , then probably any other remake thus far..although , I was very disappointed to see the Guentar didn't wanna take the time to add the amazing seam blending, to me it the best that every added to APCD..makes every course look life like!

Planting was superb..undergrowth are in the all the right places to catch wayward shots. I have watched the Deutsche Bank/SAP Open more than once on the golf channel but memory fails me..very few trees planted in the version of Gut Kaden..just not enough trees to give the the real course free????

Playability

I found Gut Kaden CB to be very challenging design for all skill levels..variety of shots needed to go low here..rarely will you have use the same club on an approach shot , which is usually a sign of the great design. I played all 5 rounds on elite skill level..and scored very well each time..very little elevation changes so it's quite easy for thoses skill levels who play without top cam and aiming marker!. the greens where very sneaky, occasionally you would can tough putt but overall the greens where fairly easy for an advanced player.. Scoring well here would be rather easy for an advanced Pro skill level clicker!

APCD

I didn't notice hardly any visual error which is rare indeed... my only complaints would be the there is no seam blendingl that I saw..A design is the statue deserves it.but Guentar didn't' wanna put in the time required to add several hundred path and nultiple mapping.Tournament objects are some of the best you'll every see in a design! Only noticed stock 3D objects L

Ext ras'

This design has everything!..excellent hole previews down the individual advertisement throughout the design.. No one does this better the Guentar!

Course Overview

Gut Kaden CB is a must download and will always be on my hard drive..but the question I have to ask myself is how often will I play it will all the great releases over the past few months..and the answer is not very often , I'm afraid.

However , the design is still probably Top 50 all time APCD releases...

I would like to thank Guenter for all of his time spent updating all of his 2k1 designs to 2k3 standards.

CLIPNOTES by Ben Bateson (ousgg)

Description
Real, farmland course
Location
Germany
Conditions
Pick some pins carefully, and M*/M* might be OK.
Concept  7/10
The C&B nine-hole courses form the championship circuit at Gut Kaden, and it's easy to see why. They're long on target-style challenge, including an impressive island green, and -despite the course's flatness and lack of elevations - imaginatively put together. Transferred to the APCD, there is the occasional moment of flatness, but also a lot of evocative moments which are very reminiscent of real golf as it is played.
Appearance  7/10
There really isn't much excuse for not eliminating the sharp edges in an APCD 1.3 release. But what is done, is done very well. The textures blends together perfectly, the water is reasonably well planted, and the trees and ditches are still immaculate, despite the course's age.
Playability  7/10
The innovation on the front half is a good way to grip the interest, and the player reaches the turn raring to grip-and-rip on the back nine, which may prove a mistake. The clever design is allied with beautiful sound design - always this complex's strong point - and there's a lot more to play with than on the A/B course.
Challenge  4/10
I am still concerned that, despite the increased risk/reward, this course is still just too easy. The vast expanses of shallow rough are partially to blame, and most designers would be looking to thicken the grass in some of the bare areas. Elsewhere, the lack of gradients on fairways and (some) greens are reasons why players will just be scoring more birdies than necessary.
Technical  6/10
There's no doubt that, despite a few signs of aging, this is one of the classic designs, and a few silly pin positions aside, there's little to fault, given its age. A modern overhaul would look to start with a revamp of textures, near and far, and the clubhouse looks like a bit of an afterthought, but there's little in the technical work that impacts on a very pleasurable round.
Overall Certainly the more exciting of the Gut Kaden combinations; starting to show its age a little. 31/50
