LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Simon Kent
Designer: This is Dan Deshaney's first offering as a designer, and even though it is not a conventional Links Course, he certainly has shown his prowess for designing and using the APCD for all it offers. Disregarding the fact that Golfcom Tee's has not been previously recognized with an official review, Dan's 'personal contribution' to the Links community will always be greatly appreciated, as it is a practice facility that will be hard to top from any other designer.
Course History: The designer perfectly explains the history behind the construction and release of this course with this quote from the Read-Me File.
'Golfcom Tee's is a full 18 hole playable courses designed to be used as a practice facility. On it you will find almost any condition or lie that might be found on a typical LS Course.'
The course was designed to help promote Golfcom, while also helping to attract players from around the globe to download a practice facility; as many people have previously just settled for the driving range included with the game.
Playability: Golfcom Tee's has been setup to actually be playable, as it would count in your statistics when you play the course, but has been designed to be used as a 'practice facility' and not really as a full course. If you do decide to actually play the course, it is important to know what pin you are actually aiming for, as there are many to choose from (Screenshot 2).
The Course: The Course 'cosmetically' only has the one tee, but as you go from Hole 1-18, you will begin to notice that you will end up in the same area as you have previously been before, except each time you will have a different distance (Screenshot 1) to hit as you move from hole to hole. The elevation changes, combined with the lies you can choose to hit off (Left of Screenshot 5), are probably the most outstanding aspects of the course and if playing along with a friend, can also be the most enjoyable. Golfcom Tee's has a wide variety of playing options, distances, lies, elevations and along with being able to Chip, Drive and Putt, the course is unlike any other practice facility you will ever come across in Links.
Favourite Hole: My favourite hole or practice option was definitely driving from the highest elevated tee found on Hole 18 (Screenshot 3), as there was plenty of fairway to work with and the distance you could actually hit the ball was substantially larger than what you could possibly drive the ball in real life.
Technically: The 3D Objects in this course are extremely well done (Screenshot 1) and combined with the multitude of textures scattered around the course, the designer has technically mastered many areas in the APCD.
Other: The course comes with a splash screen similar to those released by other 2001 courses, while as it is a practice facility, no Hole Previews or Handicaps are included, as each shot can be hit however you would like, as there are no holes that you are actually 'playing' on, even though technically the course is actually playable on all 18 Holes.
Download Value: If you're into practicing and fine tuning your game from every standpoint possible, Golfcom Tee's is certainly a recommended download, as it is small file, and a good option for people regardless of what internet speed they have.
