LINKS CORNER REVIEW |

portion of his read-me:
This course is situated in Avondale, Pa. Nestled among farm land in Chester County off of Rt.1 near Kennet Square,Pa. This course was home of the Bell Atlantic Seniors Classic in the summer of 1990. This course is known for its super fast greens and rolling fairways. It is a semi private course designed by Tom Fazio measuring 6969 yards from the Fazio Tees. My thanks go to all the staff at Hartefeld who made this possible.
His zip file contained 6 Items, 1 jpg of the course layout, 1 jpg of the course scorecard, 1 ani (animation, which I did not use), 2 read-me's, and of course the crz., which after all the other items are removed is 39.6mb.
This is course #23 for J. Harding under different variations of his first name and as for Hartfeld National, there were 2 for 2001 and this is #3 for 2003. 5 uploads for this course, the 3 for 2003 came within a week or so of each other, he kept correcting them until he was happy with this, the final result. It reminds me of the old joke. 'My book is in it's third printing, big seller asked a friend, no was the reply, the first two were blurred'. The correct listing for this, the latest of the 3 is, Hartfeldnatltb3_2003.
To the course, although I didn't see the first two of this issue I understand he corrected (among other things) the colors of the textures. The tee boxes had mow lines; unfortunately he is still not using beta testers. If I may, the mow lines were narrow and vertical in holes # 1, 6, 9, 12, 14, and 15, they were oblique in holes # 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, 13, 16, 17, and 18, but they were wide and horizontal in hole #2, very sloppy work. It doesn't affect play but takes away from the uniformity and attractiveness of the course. He had a patterned fairway with a fringe, a realistic looking rough called 'burntrough' and a checkerboard green with fringe. He used wild-grass as attractive fields in large areas in the rough and below the trees as an undergrowth along with tall grass, scrub and low flowers. His assortment of trees both green and muted reds and oranges were very well mixed and made the course a pleasant play. At many of the tee areas he had flowerbeds that added greatly to the emptiness of these areas.
The fairways were ample in size, practically hard to miss and the fairway bunkers because of the size and placement on this real course made for easy long driving, where possible because of the elevations. The elevations varied greatly, often and along with the occasional undulation in the fairway made this course less boring to play. The greens were also guarded but their distances for the approach shot and the fact that they were medium to large caused the greens bunkers to also be harmless. The greens themselves seemed to have very little in the way of breaks but they were at times annoyingly sloped but interesting enough to play for the distance of a putt. It, a putt, could be 15ft from the hole but uphill 20 inches, allow for that in your distance. The elevations of the course as I mentioned before varied, so an accurate caddie was quite important, his caddie I found was excellent.
This was a typical 'Toppbanana' course, it had great potential but he rushed it out so many times that it's less than perfect. Our policy is to suggest to the designer that he take advantage of the design and beta corners. He did at first but then fell back into old habits, rush it out with a few mistakes, its good enough. After 23 courses I'm not going to suggest this again. This course is very playable, a trifle boring especially the long 5 pars, the wide fairways will force you to play it with full wind or the course will be a walk in the park. The greens can be had if you are careful and also fortunate to get within 10 to 15 ft of the cup for your third shot. Yes it's a nice download but a few months longer and a few more beta tests and it could have been a beauty. Download it, and you will have some fun, you can drive as far as you dare to over-swing and still be safe.
Reviewer Note
I am a player not a designer and therefore rate a course as a player for other players.
