LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner'

December 2002

Happy course number 21 Bill, you certainly have improved since course number one. On this the tee boxes have a very faint checkerboard pattern, the fairways a mild checkerboard pattern with a fringe, light rough and into a heavy rough all leading to a green with the same light pattern that the tee boxes have but with a fringe. The rough has a nice velvet look to it and with the birds singing, the occasional water sounds and that miserable dog barking on hole #3 it starts out as a very nice looking course. The ice blue and tree laden mountain pano, the fairways with it's very attractive assortment of trees and large bushes give us a very pleasant atmosphere to play a nice round of golf. His trees that were the most evident ones, the ones lining the fairway, and around the tee boxes and greens were assigned top views so we had the shadows that we like and the few out lying trees didn't seem to have too many shadows, thus the shadow file was reasonably small, 3.41mb, and the redraw time was held to a minimum. The fairways were an acceptable size and had bunkers that were not of the best design and also kept out of my way but still were well placed to keep me honest. The greens were often well guarded but again didn't seem to be a problem, they, the greens, were more to the medium size and fairly easy to hit. You'll find his usual green problem on this course, they putt well within 15 to 20ft but get further out and the slope can be overwhelming. It's not a challenge; it's an annoyance. The water hazards have to be watched but the stream with its over-blue color never did present itself as a problem on the many holes that it appeared.

Being a mountain course it had many interesting elevation changes so although the caddie was quite accurate, watch him. Now, let me tell you about the hole shapes, he did a nice job here, many were blind and I found that to be the fun part of this course, they weren't bad blind, the kind that you hadn't an idea where you'd wind up, they were just off enough to give you some enjoyable drives, couple that with the elevation changes and there was a challenge here. On hole #4 par 4 if you peek through the trees on the left you can see the fairway and cut across through there, I did and after rolling back a little I was exactly 80y from the flag, a beautiful lw for a birdie. There were a few holes that had heavy rock formations surrounding the creek as it crossed the fairway, interesting but instead of making them risk/reward holes they were just common but attractive.

He has a wonderful hobby, building courses for us. We are, now that he has achieved some degree of professionalism in the use of the APCD, the recipients of his hobby. If he would seek some help with the minor aspects of course building such as better looking bunkers, custom flags, hole signs, hole previews, just a few things and possibly try beta testing a course, his approval rating would soar. Although he does get a respectable download total it could be improved. Who am I to tell him to improve, this is a nice course, an enjoyable one and at times a challenging one. Can the play be improved, of course, but this is worth the download even if you are on dial-up, it's enjoyable, download and have fun, I did.

Reviewer Note

I am a player not a designer and therefore rate a course as a player for other players.
