LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Robert Rundel
October 2002
Baden Golf and Country Club Tiefenbach, Mr. Junge's first contribution to Links Corner, is a real course from Germany. It has its own website (in German) at www.badengolf.de. Baden is set in beautiful hilly parkland; some holes are quite level, but others have major elevation changes, giving a nice variety to the course. There are a number of trees, mostly small, and bushes.
The first hole is quite typical of Baden. It is a level 290 yard par 4 with a nice wide fairway (screenshot 1). The fairway bunker does not come into play, but there is a large shallow bunker guarding the front of the green (screenshot 2). This green can be driven with a good drive; even if the drive is short into the bunker, you have about a 50% chance to bounce out of it onto the green. The bunker has no real transition from the sand to the grass, and looks a bit artificial to me. This was characteristic of most of the bunkers on this course. This hole is a near-certain birdie, and an eagle is possible with a perfect drive.
The ease of play continues throughout the course. There are three par 4 holes of under 300 yards, and only one par 4 over 400 yards. The five par 5 holes are all less than 550 yards, and are all quite reachable in two shots. Of the five par 3 holes, only two are over 200 yards, and those play downhill. . The greens are moderate to easy, and yield many straight putts. It is certainly the easiest Links course that I have encountered. My playing partner Arnold Palmer shot 56! If you are yearning to shoot a good score, this is the course for you.
It is also a very lovely and pleasant course to play. The planting is excellent. Special mention should be made of the very nice clubhouse complex which is in view from many of the holes (screenshot 3). There are benches and ball washers on all the tees, but few other custom objects, and no hole signs or hole previews. Some of the holes play downhill and offer beautiful panoramic views of the course, such as the 18th (screenshot 4). I did notice that on the downhill par 3 holes the club suggested by the caddy was one or even two clubs too strong. For example, on the 4th hole, 224 yards with a 36 yard drop, my caddy suggested a 3 iron; I used a 5 iron instead, and hit the ball to within 4 feet of the cup for a birdie.
I enjoyed playing Baden, but it just isn't a sufficient challenge to make me want to play it again. I realize that the designer is re-creating an existing course, and is thus constrained to the course as it is in the real world, but then perhaps this course was not the best choice for such a re-creation. I'm sure it's fun to play if Baden is your home course, but the challenge is way below most other Links courses.
