LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner'

October 2002

The read-me is one of the most splendid I've see yet. It's comprised of two folders. One contains six color photographs. The other has the course description, history, maps, more photos and hole previews with descriptions. This was more than just another word document, actually Adobe, but a true example of 'going the extra mile' for the player. After these two 'items' are removed from the 25.6mb Zip file you are left with a course that is only 21.7mb.

Tim's first and only other course The Links at Crowbush Cove had mixed reviews. This rendition of a 'real' course is a well designed course. The tee boxes with a first cut (fringe?), the mowed fairways with their first cut, the deep rough, the checkerboard greens with fringe all blended together to start off this attractive course with it's huge mountain looming in the background. The shades of green, no colors, the water hazards with their tall grass and shrubs rim, the tall pines buried in the deep rough which along with the shadows of 2003 kept them from looking like they were 'floating, kept the 'nature look' that this course deserved. The only parts of the courses looks that I didn't care for were the rather bland tee areas and the 'rapids' which at first I thought was a cart path, it wasn't very realistic looking in spite of the occasional sound of rushing water. He did, I feel a very nice job of design with what he had to work with, this is a 'real' course and can't be altered to suit my or anyone else's taste.

Being a mountain course the elevation changed often on all of the holes and the caddie seemed to be up to his job. The ample fairways were guarded for the most part by bunkers but they because of the size of the fairways seemed a bit easy to hit. They rolled, dove and rose to give you a multitude of shots and distances but in the end my driving average was slightly over the norm for me. The greens were a shade under medium in size and usually well guarded by bunkers. The greens bunkers were also fairly ineffective in guarding the greens leaving the course fairly easy to hit on all fronts. The putting on the greens were for me a poor putter unusually easy, yes they had slight breaks but were fairly flat again duplicating the actual greens of this 'real' course. Hole # 15 had the look of a risk/reward hole but unfortunately as much as I tried I couldn't get across the barrier of rough and cart path bisecting the fairway and had to settle for a 3w lay-up. Hole # 18.big finish, big yes.finish yes.big finish no, it was narrower than the preceding 17 holes and guarded by 6 fairway and 3 green bunkers but even with its par 5, 622y size didn't seem to be difficult. The back nine seemed to be a little less demanding than the front nine.

Yes I know I made it sound like a course that you wouldn't want to play, the large fairways and the easy greens would be easily offset with harsher conditions than I tested under. If the course was played with full wind, hard and fast greens with difficult pins this would be a very enjoyable course to play and the beauty of it doesn't hurt it either. With the small sized download and the well-made attractive looks, the easy play, I would recommend this course to all. It's a perfect size for the dial-up user and a quick one for the broadband user. I would say download and enjoy it.

Reviewer Note

I am a player not a designer and therefore rate a course as a player for other players.
