LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Robert Rundel

December 2002

Kelley Pointe GC is a very beautiful woodland course, but, disappointingly to me, one of only 9 holes. Mr. Barnes' first course design, Botany Bay GC, released in September 2001, is an 18 hole course which received a very good review with a rating of 84, and 4 user stars. Judging from Dave Campbell's excellent review, Botany Bay has many similarities to Kelley Pointe, such as long carries to narrow fairways, many imaginative bunkers, beautiful textures, and very creative hole designs. 'Botany Bay is an exceptional first design, among some of the best firsts from any designer. Heck, this would be a good 10th design!'

The view from the first tee at Kelley Pointe, screenshot 1, is very typical of this course. The nice round tee boxes are elevated, as are all the tees. The narrow fairway bends just a bit to the left, and is guarded on the right by a large bunker with two large oak trees next to it. The left side has a narrow strip of rough, a cart path, and then deep woods. This is the #3 handicap hole, and it takes a delicately placed drive to stay out of trouble.

The woods are quite lovely, mostly green with a few autumn colors here and there. The textures of the fairway, rough, and green are very realistic. The bunkers, with their associated trees, are really excellent. Mr. Barnes has a real talent with the APCD. One of the strongest features of the design is the creative use of trees as part of Mother Nature's defenses against the golfer. Screenshot 2 shows a good example of this on the 4th hole. The drive is downhill, with a long bunker on the right. If you aim toward the left side of the fairway, you then have to hit over or around a really huge oak in the middle of a large bunker.

Screenshot 3 shows another creative use of trees on the 5th hole. Two large trees grow out of the bunker on the right, and three smaller ones in another bunker screen the green. Notice also in this screenshot the lovely textures, the imaginative plantings, and the beautifully designed bunkers.

My favorite view on the course is from the 6th tee, screenshot 4. This is the only water on the course. Behind the island green is a lovely wooded hill, and the red tree to the right of the tee boxes is especially vivid.

Arnold Palmer shot 29, 7 under par, but that is a bit deceiving, since Arnold almost always hits the fairways. The greens are moderate to easy. But the course can also be very difficult if you aren't driving well.

Besides missing the other nine holes, I also have a complaint about the sameness of the holes. Each tee is elevated, and all the holes play downhill. (There must be some strenuous uphill climbs from the green to the next tee!) All the fairways are very narrow, with a long bunker on one side and heavy woods on the other. I'd like to see an uphill hole or two, and maybe a dramatic dogleg, just for variety.

But Kelley Pointe is an exceptionally beautiful course, created with impeccable technique. I enjoyed playing it, and it will stay on my hard drive. I recommend it, especially because it is only about a 16 Meg download. But please, Mr. Barnes, next time give us 18 holes!
