LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Ian Downs
An attempt to design a course, surrounding a large span of water, with open fairways and trees, guarding the areas of rough. The course plays fairly well. The views are somewhat questionable though in some of the later holes.
This course has the usual qualities of typical width fairways with some tough putting greens. The numerous drives over water from the tee on the back 9 make this a little over-wet though. Bunkers on the course are mostly LS style (flat, with little to no depth) and the trees are vast if encroached.
Stepping back and looking at the flaws in this course, they appear on every hole sadly. Without wishing to highlight everything I found to be critical of, I'll list some that stood out badly for myself.
Elevations around the green are very steep, in some cases visually wrong. The back of the green is an area least tested, and usually the place to look to see if all is well. On the 4th green, to the left side is a lip where the fairway and rough join all three textures badly. The 11th fairway bunker has partial texture missing. Hitting out of bounds to the left on the 5th hole doesn't give you any penalties. The running water across the 12th fairway was higher than my player, possibly better looking with a lead-in slope. Hitting over many of the water holes caused numerous visuals to appear wrong, with the water texture sometimes not even showing. Indeed on the 10th tee, I took a low punch shot and ended up in water before the ball landed, leaving me somewhat puzzled. And I suppose the trees growing out of the rocks on the 17th hole leave a few questions open too.
Suffice to say I may be too critical. I look for the things that the designer spent time on, rather than play the course. Doug's review following will do that, I simply want to explore the designer's intent and hopefully help he/she concentrate on the areas they feel least confident.

Reviewers Note:
I have no experience with the designer. This review is based on playability and looks alone. Other reviews will highlight the design aspects of this course.
Bob Fournier is the designer of Fox Quarry. Bob also designed TPC at Rolling Hills. Fox Quarry is a Park Style course with trees, sand and water. To get Fox Quarry to work, you will have to unzip it into another directory and then add it within Links2001. Unzipping it into the Courses folder will not work. Fox Quarry is a good looking course visually and enjoyed my round.
Visuals: An above average design visually. There are a few rough edges but overall it looked good.
Off the Tee: Your tee shots at Fox Quarry will test you from time to time. You will have narrow landing areas for you drive but none are too difficult. Hole #6 has a 203' elevated tee.
The Approach: Your approach shots onto the greens at Fox Quarry are not too difficult. There is minimal slope on the fairways and the greens are very receptive to your approach shot.
Putting: Putting is easy to moderate at Fox Quarry. There is minimal break on most of the greens but holes#3, #7 and #9 will test you if you have longer putts into the slopes.
Another good design Bob. Good Luck on your next course.
