LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Albion Hills - Designed by Ralph Cox

Reviewed by Chuck Clark May 2002

Background: This is the first golf course released to Links Corner by Mr. Cox. The read-me has no information about the course, so let’s go take a look.

Overall Impression: This is an eighteen hole par-three course. All of the holes are one-shoters. While I liked this idea for something a little different, this course was so poorly done, it is not really playable. It has many technical errors and glitches.

Playability: Well, since this is a par three course, it is obviously all about hitting greens from the tee with a variety of clubs. You certainly aren’t tested in any other way. Unfortunately it has so many errors that parts of the course are not playable.

Shot Values: I can’t really think of anything to say here.

Visuals: This course has many interesting visual aspects. The “row of trees along each side of the fairway” technique is on full display here. This is a common beginner’s mistake of just planting trees right along each edge of the hole. This results in rows of trees that look very unnatural and phony. There is no other planting between holes, so each hole is its own little botanical island. There are many other technical errors which detract from the visual aspects as well. There were also some bizarre uses of water hazards here as well. There were a number of small creeks between the tees and greens. But they were completely not in play. There was also one green that had a moat of running water around the green and also cutting through the back half of the green. This “running” water didn’t go anyplace, so I am not sure where it was running to.

Technique: This is the major place that this course fails. It has too many technical errors for me to fully document here, but they include: bad shadows; sharp texture edges; floating objects; unnatural planting; inconsistent textures; and badly formed bunkers. The designer has some good ideas, but he needs much work and experience to implement these ideas. Beta testing would have warned him of many of these things.

Summary: I can’t recommend downloading this course. It is just too poorly done. The designer needs to spend a lot more time with the program and get some good feedback from beta testers around here.
