LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Pete Dixon July 2001

This is one of 3 courses that were all released around the same time in April by Bud, the other two being Costal Dunes and Lions Paw.

This is a woodland/parkland setting with a good variety of trees, fairway, a cut then rough then dry grass followed by whatever is among the trees. The dry grass texture gives it a nice feel and when I stood on the first tee I was impressed with the hole as it went off into the distance, the tee was nicely done and the planting looked good, I couldn't see water or bunkers at this stage or how elevations had been handled.

My placement from the fairway and again on the green let me see that there were some pulls in the elevation work along by the dry grass, the green did not sit comfortably from the overview and the bunkers were not finished around the lip but were blocky.

The second was the same, looked good from the tee but deteriorated as you got nearer the hole. Unfortunately this trend continued throughout the course, the views from the tees and the planting surrounding them was good in the whole but the course lost it by some quite untidy work around bunkers, elevations and shaping as well as the planting being carelessly placed too in certain areas. The cart paths again looked good near the tee but lost the plot further up the course.

Despite the negatives there is plenty here to make the course worth continuing playing, it is a very good design and there are some interesting holes, it is just lacking in finesse and lacking enough to make it an average to below average course instead of the very good one it could be.

Stock textures and objects have been used throughout but this is mixed well, it is only spoilt by the above mentioned points.

Best Hole: I like the long par 4 8th which gives a good idea of what I have spoken about the views being good from the tees, it also lets itself down with the rest of the hole though.

Overall: Another one of those courses that makes me think there is bags of potential here, the tees are good and the design of the course, it is let down by the mistakes such as pulled verts, poor planting, poor bunkers, the errors are there to be seen and this does detract from the overall feel significantly.

There are plenty of better courses out there, there are also plenty of worse ones, I wouldn't recommend it for download if your life depended on it but if you feel like you want to have a look it is worth it to see the potential. I hope Bud's next course has improved in the areas outlined, I am sure it will.
