LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Dark Pines by Mat Leclair

Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner'

January 2002

This is a very beautiful course, his deep rich rough nicely blended in with the tee box and greens that had the very important fringe for a 3 par course. It was heavily planted and had an attractive undergrowth. He used deeply colored plants that added to the looks of the course and the wood treatments around the water hazards fitted in very well. There isn’t too much that you can say about a 3 par because without any fairways there aren’t any fairway bunkers, undulations, slopes or doglegs to plan strategic moves for a challenging game. There is a deer at the tee on the #8 hole not showing his good side to us.

The elevations were very well done which made this course an enjoyable but fast round. You continually found yourself adjusting the trajectory for the assorted lengths that he used on each hole. If you do miss the snap the fringe is large enough for some enjoyable chipping. More often than not there were bunkers at the greens and many water hazards between you and the semi small greens. The greens of course were the most important part of the game. Hitting the snap on a course such as this is very important and this course is a great tool to practice your short irons. If you didn’t come close to the cup there were tiers, undulations and heavy breaks to allow for. If you did hit the snap you will find as I did that this course was more than fun, I hit the flagstick 5 times. After playing Links since it first came out in 96 I had my first hole in one just about 2 months ago. This fantastic gem of a course gave me two; count them two ace’s in one round. Yes they are saved and I have screen shots that I will give away autographed. Land near the cup, the putting was very easy but I mean close. I found this hard to do if the snap was off a fraction. This course is a small and very attractive looking and playing download. It is my belief that it will be an excellent addition to your course list. I hope you will enjoy playing it as much as I did.
