LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Doral Blue Monster 2003 by John Andersen

Doral Blue Monster

Links 2003 Version

3/5/03

Additions/changes from 2001:

-"Plane" sounds reduced

-All bunkers reworked and shallowed to -reflect real dimensions

-Panorama added

-Hole Previews added

-New textures

-More accurate tree planting

-Additional pin placements

One of the perennial favorites has been redone with the new textures and other enhancements that APCD can add to a course. He has a beautiful texture in the tee box and carries it over to the unmowed fairways (without a first cut) to the green that has a generous fringe. Throughout the course were large trees of assorted varieties, swaying palms (I can dream can’t I) and a host of full shadows to round out this exquisite course. Although many of the tee areas are fairly empty, one of the hazards of “Real” courses, there are a few that have muted color flowerbeds and groupings under trees. The overwhelming amount of fairways are littered with well made bunkers even though they (fairways) are mid sized they seem fairly but not entirely safe for the player. The smallish greens are well guarded as well and are quite enjoyable to play. Putting on the greens here seems to be very fair, nice breaks and because of their size I had the occasional chip from the fringe.

Turn your speakers up when you reach hole # 10, the starter is calling out the names of the next group of players and I do believe that you will recognize the names. At the same time you can hear the faint sound of balls being hit on the other parts of the course. This adds not only a modicum of being there but makes the course seem to be friendly. Depending on your wind conditions the first 3 par 5’s have definite possibilities of being eagle holes even to a duffer like me. I did say perfect conditions didn’t I? When you reach hole # 12, a par 5, 603y hole a birdie will be a welcome sight. The elevations were minor but tricky especially for me, besides my driver I only carry a 3w, a 5w would have come in handy here. The caddie was magnificent.

The original Doral that he made was a gem, this is even better. I did play the 2001 version before I played this and this is an excellent replacement for it. The bunkers, the occasional water hazard, the small greens and the guarded fairways make this one of our better downloads. It is a beautiful course made even more challenging and attractive by his designing talent. If all of this sounds as if I am advising you to download the course, well your right. Get it, play it and by all means enjoy it, I know I did.
